Bio
Danja Atari is the newest phenom of the Tengu Basement. In the hip-hop and electro-underground scene the name „tengu“ has become a „Ruhrpott-Tradition“. One of the multifaceted projects of the basement nowadays is Danja Atari, who performs in her unique style. Drum n’ Bass elements combine with electronic beats à la massive attack or portishead.
Born and raised in Berlin, Danja moved to the Ruhr District in 1995 where she discovered „The Basement“ and they discovered her. She is part Tunisian, part French, but mostly German, perhaps explaining the exotic sound of the young and charming singer Danja, a world traveler with culturally diverse experiences. She offers a little bit chanson, a little bit spoken word, and lots of aspirated refrains that either guide to silence or invite you to go crazy and wild.
The LP „Shades of July“ was produced by Herner producer Sebastian Maier, alias Zap. Zap got his experiences working with the Tengu Basement and the working with the Turtle Bay Country Club since 1998. Together with Matthias Arfmann (Beginner, Yello, Patrice, Kastrierte Philosophen etc.) he worked on projects like the remix LP „Arfmann recomposed“(Deutsche Grammophon/Universal Music) or the dub and soul album of the Kenyan artist Onejiru („Golden Delicious“). This,, Atari’s debut album „Shades of July“ is another milestone production for Maier. It sounds very fresh, just like shades in July!
Atari’s album is an eclectic mix of sounds and rhythms. In the title cut, „Shades of July,” Drum‘n’Bass loops with clear guitar. On the other hand, oriental-influenced tunes combine with british trip-hop elements, as in „Tragic Perception“. The intro cut, „Tunisia“ harkens to Danja’s North African roots; her real name is Danja Mathari. Danja Atari’s debut album „Shades of July“ finds its calm in tracks like „Too Late“ and „The City“, where jazzy e-pianos and contrabass as well as spherical sounds grab the audience’s attention. More impressions can only be gained by listening to the 12-tracks strong album „Shades of July“!
